Video: Adventures at Lamanai Outpost Belize
To get to the Lamanai Outpost you drive for about an hour from the Belize International Airport up to a boat landing where you pick-up a shallow-hulled boat and blast through the river for 26 miles. This is a great arrival to the Lodge situated at the broad lagoon fed by ancient springs which is the source of the river. The Lamanai archaeological site is about 1 mile down the river from the Outpost.
We immediately took a nature hike that afternoon. The jungle had us on edge (they were showing Predator at Ramon's on the Amerbgris Caye beach :0 ) and we, as city people, were out of our comfort zone. George however, our guide from the Outpost, knew everything about the jungle and gave us a fantastic overview and welcome to this amazing area.
We saw all kinds of birds, plants, insects, spiders as well as howler monkeys up close as they were frequenting the bread nut tree in front of our cabin. The highlight of the visit was the night airboat trip into the marsh to collect a crocodile to record data for the University of Florida crocodile research program. Or actually, the highlight might have been swimming in the lagoon after we saw several crocs and few really big ones (8 feet long). I had a chance to get the drone flying as well.
